Kane Williamson turned 29 on Thursday. There were wishes pouring in for the dashing New Zealand skipper from the fans and the cricketing fraternity. Williamson had recently led the Kiwis to their second straight World Cup final where they suffered heartbreak as the hosts England were crowned champions for the very first time due to a boundary count rule after both teams were tied at the end of the entire 100 overs as well as the edge-of-the-seat super over.
However, putting those bitter memories behind, the Black Caps will now look to start afresh in the upcoming bilateral series against Sri Lanka. However, before the two teams get involved in some high-octane action on the field, there was a surprise in store for the icy cool captain. What was that? Let us find out.
That's right. It happened during a practice match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka Board President's XI at Katunayake. The Sri Lankan fans decided to make the occasion special for Williamson as they had brought a cake for him. The charismatic Black Caps batsman obliged by cutting the cake and having a piece of it.
The image of this memorable occasion was posted by Sri Lanka Cricket on their official Twitter handle with a caption 'What a way to celebrate the Birthday! Kane Williamson celebrates his 29th with Sri Lankan fans eating a piece of Cake with them during the warm-up!'
Even the netizens were overwhelmed by the Sri Lankan peoples' wonderful hospitality. At the same time, they were also full of praises for Williamson.
The Kiwis are currently in Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series which will be followed by three T20Is. The Test series will also mark the beginning of the ICC World Test Championship for both sides.
