For those who have watched a cricket match in the stadium, the emotions often run really high and the crowd regularly gets charged up. Fans also try to unsettle the opposition by booing the players and even abusing them. During India's ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 clash against the defending champions Australia on Sunday, Steve Smith was at the receiving end when he was booed by the Indian fans while fielding at the boundary. Not able to tolerate their actions, Indian captain Virat Kohli came forward and asked the fans not to subject Smith to ‘cheater’ jibe and boos during the match and instead cheer for him. Both the batting greats then exchanged handshakes and Smith patted also patted Kohli's back.
Here's the video that won hearts and Captain Virat Kohli was applauded for his sportsman spirit.
While Kohli was appreciated by everyone for this gesture there was one person who criticized the batting icon. He was former English cricketer Nick Compton. The former England opener took to Twitter and wrote 'I don’t think Virat Kohli had any right to tell fans to stop booing at Warner and Smith but rather clap them.. found it rather condescending if truth be told!'
Compton faced a backlash from the cricket fans.
