June 25th, 1983. That day will always remain etched in the minds of all the Indian cricket lovers. It was on this day 36 years ago, that Team India had lifted their maiden World Cup under Kapil Dev's captaincy at the Mecca of Cricket, Lord's. The priceless image of a smiling Kapil Dev holding the Prudential Cup is still one of the iconic moments of that triumph. This win ended up changing the face of Indian Cricket forever and it also inspired the youngsters to take up the sport.
The triumph was indeed very special because no one had given India any chance after their failures in the previous two editions in 1975 and 1979 respectively. However, 'Kapil's Devils' silenced one and all with their spirited performances. In the final, India overcame the mighty two-time champions West Indies, led by Clive Lloyd, by 43 runs and they from underdogs, became the world-beaters of the game.
After this emphatic win, India then had to wait for 28 long years to be crowned as World Champions. That dream came true in 2011 at the Wankhede Stadium when the then captain MS Dhoni finished off by hitting a six against Sri Lanka.
Speaking of 2011 World Cup, two of the members from that victorious squad, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh came forward to relive India's first-ever Cricket World Cup win. The duo posted the picture of Kapil Dev and Mohinder (Jimmy) Amarnath posing with the World Cup trophy at the Lord's balcony.
Sehwag took to Twitter and wrote 'The day that started it all. Landmark moment in the history of Indian sports. 25th June, 1983 -the day we were World Champions the first time. Kapil Paaji's valiant contributions, everyone contributing in their own way, but I think so much of Jimmy Paa, the MOM in semis & finals'
