There are fairytale debuts and then there are nightmarish debuts, and between the two, Tamil Nadu mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy probably experienced the latter during Kings XI Punjab's encounter against two-time IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. Chakravarthy who was bought by the Punjab franchise for a whopping Rs. 8.4 crore in December's IPL auctions bowled an expensive first over for Kings XI Punjab.

Chakravarthy came to bowl the second over after Mohammad Shami had bowled an outstanding first where he had only given away one run. However, he did not get a good reception from Sunil Narine who himself is a mystery spinner as he was clobbered for three sixes and a four and the youngster ended up conceding 25 runs.

Even though Varun Chakravarthy had a forgettable first over, he later went on to pick his maiden IPL wicket when he got rid of a well-set Nitish Rana who had scored a quickfire 34-ball 63. He picked up one wicket by giving away 35 runs in his three overs at an economy of 11.67.
