On Friday, India's cricket god Sachin Tendulkar caught up with his former rival and West Indies great Brian Lara. Though, the meeting between two batsmen who had scored 27,874 Test runs between them wasn't planned.
Taking to Twitter to reveal the meeting of the rivals turned friends, Tendulkar posted a photo with a message, which read "Great way to welcome the weekend ... surprise visit from a good friend. Chillin’ with #BrianLara 😉 #FridayFun"
Apart from scoring nearly 28,000 runs in the longest format of the game, the duo were equally successful in the 50-over format. In the ODIs, the duo had 28,831 runs in 762 matches amongst them.
Lara is presently in the country amidst West Indies' ongoing tour of India. The two teams have already played out the Test series, which the hosts won 2-0. What's left is five ODIs and three T20Is as the Windies try and salvage some pride from the tour.
But the visitors received a huge blow days ahead of the start of the limited-overs leg, with star batsman Evin Lewis pulling out of the squad citing 'personal reasons'. Kieran Powell and Nicholas Pooran were called up as his replacement in the ODIs and T20s respectively.
Evin Lewis had recently declined a central contract offered by Cricket West Indies, potentially making him more available for leagues around the world, following in the footsteps of Chris Gayle and other stars from the region.
Chris Gayle, who is playing the Afghanistan Premier League in Sharjah, had already made himself unavailable for the five ODIs and three ODIs in India. Lewis would have come handy in India, having played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He has two ODI hundreds in 35 games and as many in T20 format in just 17 matches.
“Powell and Pooran have been asked to replace Evin Lewis in the ODI and T20I squads, while McCoy will replace Alzarri Joseph who remains under observation for his return to full fitness,” read a Cricket West Indies statement.
