The Chennai Super Kings snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in a sensational finish to their IPL league stage encounter versus the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday. The win involved many stand-out moments in the last three overs including an incredible unorthodox six on the first ball of the last over by Ravindra Jadeja.
MS Dhoni had held firm at one end for CSK as they chased down the Royals' 151-run total. He'd had a match-saving partnership with Ambati Rayudu before Rayudu was caught off Ben Stokes for 57. In the pre-final overs, however, Dhoni was hit on the head by a 143 kmph ball by Jofra Archer following which he appeared to tire, once even needing to get on his back. With the pressure mounting, as the final over began, it was Jadeja facing Ben Stokes.
On Stokes' first ball, which was delivered into the blockhole, Jadeja, with little time to adjust his feet, swung his bat wildly, hitting the ball clean down the ground high over the bowler's head. As he hit his shot, both Jadeja and Stokes fell to the ground unbalanced. Dhoni, however, sprinted from the non-striker's end, seemingly unsure whether the ball would travel the distance. When MSD reached the striker's end, Jadeja was still fallen on the ground, his eyes beady and tracing the ball's arc as it sailed over the boundary. Dhoni made a short attempt to get him up and running, but upon realising that the shot had gone for six, he lifted his bat and mock-hit Jadeja on the head with it, seemingly incredulous at the shot he had just witnessed.
The hit and moment went viral and was shown multiple times in subsequent replays. Jadeja ultimately watched his side win from the non-striker's end as Dhoni was clean-bowled only to be replaced by Santner who hit the final ball of the game for a six to secure the win. Just before that, a no ball that wasn't given saw Dhoni march onto the field in rage.
The Chennai Super Kings are atop the IPL table after winning six out of seven matches.
