  • India tried their level best in the five-match Test series against England, but ended up losing 4-1
  • Despite the loss, the Virat Kohli led side's position as the top Test ranked team was not affected, but its image as the world's best has taken a severe beating

Despite the 1-4 series drubbing at the hands of England, the Virat Kohli led side's position as the top Test ranked team was not affected, but its image as the world's best has taken a severe beating with its famed batting line-up brutally exposed and open for scrutiny.

Even with a 5-0, or 4-1 loss, it would mean the Indian cricket team would lose 10 points at the top and come down to 115 points while retaining their numero uno spot in the latest ICC rankings.

There was furthermore delight for England, who saw themselves climb to the fourth spot after their latest Test series win. The Three Lions had started the Test with at 5th position with 97 points, and now they find themselves with an improvement in one place and in the process have added 8 points under their belt.

Sandwiched in between the two teams are South Africa and Australia, who sit at second and third place respectively with a few decimal points separating the two sides. New Zealand occupies 5th spot with 102 points, while the rest of the teams on the table are separated by a margin of 5 points. Here's the ranking table.

In respect with rankings for batsmen, Virat Kohli cemented his position at the top after his stellar showing in England. The Indian cricket team skipper sits atop the rankings with 937 points. He is followed by Australia's tainted former skipper Steve Smith, who holds the second spot with 929 points.

While talking about the recently concluded Test series between India and England, many may argue that India probably did not deserve a 1-4 series hammering but that's how things pan out when a visiting team misses opportunities when they come their way and clinch defeat from the jaws of victory.

But it was a great advertisement for Test cricket with result in all 5 Test matches. India can take some heart from the fact that barring Lord's Test match they were in the series in all the other 4 matches.

In the end, India's position as numero uno as top Test ranking may not be affected but its image as the worlds best has taken a severe beating with its famed batting line-up brutally exposed and open for scrutiny.
