Team India captain Virat Kohli has answered one of the biggest questions about India's World Cup 2019 squad - one over which clamour has only grown following the events of the IPL.

Speaking to a newspaper, Kohli has spoken about the reasoning behind the decision to exclude Delhi Capitals wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant and select KKR's Dinesh Karthik for the quadrennial extravaganza which India are almost certainly among the favourites.

Kohli has said that at the end, it all came down to experience, and that at clutch situations, Karthik has shown composure especially as a finisher. This is particularly relevant as irrespective of who was selected between them, they would play understudy to MS Dhoni - India's starting keeper who is widely considered one of the best finishers in the game. This is buttressed by the fact that he not only captained but also scored the winning shot - a spectacular six - when India overcame Sri Lanka to win the World Cup at the Wankhede stadium eight years ago.

Kohli's argument is along the same lines as chief selector MSK Prasad who had also spoken of Dinesh Karthik's experience.

To put things into perspective, the 33-year-old Dinesh Karthik made his test and ODI debuts for India all the way back in 2004 and has played over 90 ODIs scoring over 1700 runs. Pant, meanwhile, is only 21 and has played 5 ODIs and not really made a mark.

In terms of T20s, however, Pant has fared much better putting up some sensational performances, though Karthik hasn't fared badly either.

The World Cup is now just two weeks away, with hosts England set to take on South Africa on May 30 in the opener. India, meanwhile, will begin their campaign a few days later, playing the Proteas on June 5.

India's squad for the World Cup is the following: Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma (Vice Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni (Wicket Keeper), Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammad Shami
