The much-awaited announcement of the 15-member squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 took place on Monday, and Virender Sehwag conveyed his best wishes to the team.
As the squad was announced by Chief Selector MSK Prasad at a press conference in Mumbai, the former Indian opener took to Twitter and wrote, “Best Wishes to Team India. #CWC19" along with a picture of the players.
Sehwag had represented India at three world cups from 2003 to 2011 and was among the players of the winning squad that lifted the trophy at the Wankhede stadium in his last one.
The 15-member squad announced on Monday didn’t throw up any major surprises and only Dinesh Karthik in place of Rishabh Pant as the second wicket-keeper might have divided opinions.
Virat Kolhi has Rohit Sharma as his deputy while the latter will have Shikhar Dhawan as his opening partner. KL Rahul fits in as a back-up opener or middle-order batsmen, according to the situation. Wicket-keeper MS Dhoni will handle the responsibility of the middle order while allrounders Hardik Pandya, Vijay Shankar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kedar Jadhav will be expected to contribute with both the bat and ball.
The bowling attack features pretty much the same cricketers who’ve played numerous matches in recent times. Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as the spinners. Ravi Shastri is the head coach of the team, Sanjay Bangar the batting coach, Bharat Arun the bowling coach and R Sridhar as the fielding coach.
The ICC Cricket World Cup will be held in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14.
