The beginning of the eighth season of Big Bash League was headlined with the change in toss. Instead of the normal 'coin flip', which has been used ever since the sport was first player, 'bat flip' was the mode to choose which team would bat or bowl first.

But once the tournament began, the on-field action took centre stage. The first headlining moment came in the very first match, when Brisbane Heat's James Pattison was given run-out by third umpire despite making the crease, which was followed by the opposition team, Adelaide Strikers, calling him back.

In the second match, Perth Scorchers' Ashton Turner sweetly timed a ball which struck the roof and fell back in play. The umpires decided to give it as a '6'.

But arguably the biggest headliner of this tournament has been the massive six scored by Sydney Sixers' Sean Abott. In the 17th over of the second innings, Abott stepped out of his crease and smashed Fawad Ahmed's delivery out of the ground. He struck it so cleanly that the ball ended up landing in the roof.

The cricket on the field is finally taking the limelight in the competition. Prior to the start of BBL, all the talk was about the 'bat toss', which would end a 141-year tradition of conducting the toss by flipping a coin.
