Hack:

  • Dinesh Karthik, in the final ball of the 15th over in the first T20I, produced an effort out of the blue to send DJ Mitchell back to the pavilion
  • His efforts weren't enough as India lost the match by 80 runs, their worst ever defeat in T20Is

After a resounding 4-1 ODI series win against the Kiwis, which came right after a historic Test-ODI double over Australia, the Indian team, without skipper Virat Kohli, were brought down to earth with in their 80-run defeat to New Zealand in the first ODI. It was shoddy performance by the Men in Blue, both with the bat, and the ball, as they suffered their worst-ever defeat in the shortest format of the game.

There was barely any positive to takeaway for the Indian fans from this fixture, but one incident which the spectators did rejoice was the stunning effort near the boundary ropes by Dinesh Karthik.

In the presence of MS Dhoni, Karthik has been forced to shed his gloves and stand in the outfield. But in the first T20I, he showed his incredible ability, even when he is not donning the gloves.

Karthik, in the final ball of the 15th over, produced an effort out of the blue to send DJ Mitchell back to the pavilion. Fieliding at long-on, the 33-year-old, despite being unbalanced, first managed to save the ball from going for six, before completing a brilliant catch.

Though, his efforts in the field weren't enough as New Zealand made 219 for 6 in their 20 overs, after being put into bat by Rohit Sharma. The star of the show for the Kiwis was opener Tim Seifert, who scored a brilliant 43-ball 84. The others who played their part were Colin Munro (34 of 20) and skipper Kane Williamson (34 of 22).

In reply, India were never in the game, and lost wickest in regular intervals. Rohit was gone early, and despite a promising partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar, New Zealand were always on top.

After the dismissal of Dhawan and Shankar, India's middle-orde crumbled. Despite the best efforts of MS Dhoni (39 of 31), the visitors lost the match by 80 runs, their worst ever defeat in this format.
