Faf du Plessis was electrifying on the field against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday. He had earlier taken a perfectly balanced catch to dismiss his countryman and former South African team-mate AB de Villiers. Here's the video of that stunning catch.
The Proteas skipper was then involved in yet another stunning effort on the field where he played a huge role in getting rid of the death overs specialist batsman Marcus Stoinis. The incident happened in the 17th over of the RCB innings which was bowled by Imran Tahir. Tahir bowled a simple delivery outside the off stump as Stoinis heaved his bat with full force with the intention of clearing the boundary. It was a perfectly executed shot but could not clear the boundary as Faf du Plessis who was standing at long on kept his composure and judged the ball properly before attempting the catch. Faf realized that he was going to lose his balance so he threw the ball back after he had and collected it as he fell inside the boundary ropes. However, his efforts did not go in vain as he was backed by Dhruv Shorey who completed the catch as Stoinis was sent back to the dugout.
The video of this relay catch was posted on Twitter. Here's the video.
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and decided to bowl first. It was not the start that Royal Challengers Bangalore wanted as they lost their captain Virat Kohli early. Kohli who had scored a match-winning ton in the last game against Kolkata Knight Riders was dismissed for nine in the third over after he was caught behind by his opposite number MS Dhoni off Deepak Chahar. Parthiv Patel then added 47 runs with AB de Villiers. Veteran wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel once again played a vital knock for RCB. The southpaw played a spectacular cameo of a 37-ball 53 at a strike rate of 143.24 which included two boundaries and four maximums.
His cameo helped RCB get to a respectable total of 161/7 in their 20 overs.
In reply, CSK got to a disastrous start after losing Shane Watson and Suresh Raina in the very first over. Soon they were reduced to 28/4. Skipper MS Dhoni then played an incredible knock that kept CSK's hopes alive. The CSK skipper added 55 runs for the fifth wicket with Ambati Rayadu. The defending champions had to score 26 runs from the final over. Dhoni who had anchored the innings took the responsibility of adding the finishing touches. He played the anchor's role to near perfection as he hit Umesh Yadav for 24 runs. Unfortunately, he missed the final delivery and decided to take a run in order to tie the game but Parthiv Patel showed a good presence of mind behind the stumps and ran out Shardul Thakur as RCB snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by 1 run. Dhoni registered his highest score in IPL. He scored a magnificent 48-ball 84 at a strike rate of 175.00 and including seven sixes.
