Netizens and even cricket experts might have erred in terming Ben Stokes’ one-handed flying effort the ‘catch of the tournament’ as West Indies’ Sheldon Cottrell just gave the Englishman a run for his money. After his unique ‘salute’ celebration after wickets with the ball, the pacer displayed another facet of his passion for the game with an extraordinary catch against Australia in their second World Cup encounter at Nottingham on Thursday.

In the 45th over, Steve Smith brilliantly flicked an Oshane Thomas delivery and the ball was all set to land in the stands. However, Cottrell had other plans. The fast bowler, who was fielding at deep square leg, quickly covered substantial ground and stretched fully to grab the ball. However, the momentum would’ve surely taken him over the boundary rope, but the West Indian showed outstanding presence of mind to maintain his composure as he released the ball into the air, crossed the boundary line, jumped in again and caught the ball.

Earlier in the day, Cottrell put in a fine opening spell of 4 overs, giving away just 12 runs and picking up the crucial wickets of David Warner and Glenn Maxwell. What was interesting, though, was his march and salute celebration.

West Indies put a spirited display against favourites Australia, but fell short of the target of 289. Steven Smith and Nathan Couler-Nile starred with the bat with innings of 73 and 92 respectively. The Caribbean boys were undone by Mitchell Starc's five-wicket spell despite fifties from Shai Hope and Jason Holder.

Previously, Ben Stokes’ catch against South Africa in the opening World Cup match had many like Harsha Bhogle and Aakash Chopra terming it the ‘catch of the tournament.’

Chris Woakes' catch against Pakistan also upped the ante.
