Hosts and title favourites England now find themselves in a spot of bother as they head towards the business end of the tournament. After back-to-back defeats against Sri Lanka and New Zealand respectively, the three-time World Cup finalists now face a certain risk of being knocked out in the league stages. Therefore, they need to ensure that they win their last two matches against India and New Zealand respectively to stay in contention for the semis race.

The Eoin-Morgan led side will be up against an undefeated Team India who are at the second spot in the points table with five wins in six matches and 11 points on the board. Meanwhile, England are at the fourth position with four wins in seven games and three losses. They have eight points in their tally.

Ahead of their clash against Virat Kohli & Co., when asked about the criticism that the hosts had received from two of their former captains Micheal Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen respectively since their two consecutive defeats, English opening batsman Jonny Bairstow said that people were waiting for them to fail and that they were not letting the tournament hosts to win in many ways. Bairstow also added that the critics are waiting for the team to lose so that they can jump on their throat. The swashbuckling batsman then vented out his frustration by saying that it was a typical English thing to do in every sport.

Kevin Pietersen had earlier criticized the current England skipper Eoin Morgan by saying that he was scared after England's 64-run loss against their arch-rivals Australia. Meanwhile, Vaughan had said that the hosts could be heading for their worst World Cup.

However, Bairstow's comments did not go down well with Vaughan and he lashed back at the English opener on social media. The ex-skipper wrote ' How wrong can @jbairstow21 be .. Never has England team had so much support but it’s you and your team that has disappointed Jonny .. WIN 2 games and you are in the semis .. With this negative, pathetic mindset I am concerned though .. it’s not the media’s fault you have lost 3 games .. !!!" (sic)

At the same time, after losing against the old rivals, Australia at Lord's; England slipped to the number two spot on the ICC rankings and lost their reign as the number one team in the ODIs. Their ratings dropped to 122 from 124, making India the number one team with 123 ratings.
