Virat Kohli was set to complete 20,000 International runs if he had scored 104, but unfortunately, he couldn’t. Nevertheless, reaching milestones has become an easy affair for the Indian skipper. Kohli hit his 52nd ODI fifty against Afghanistan in India's fifth match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup on Saturday in Southampton.

With this fifty, Kohli equalised the record of Mohammad Azharuddin of scoring three consecutive fifties as captain in World Cup. This was Kohli’s fourth fifty in 2019.

Kohli was dismissed for 18 in India's opening game of the 2019 World Cup against South Africa, but from there on, he went on to hit 82 (against Australia) and 77 (against Pakistan) in the next two matches.

Against Afghanistan, Kohli was looking in great touch and it seemed like he will play a captain’s knock to steer India to a respectable total after India lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma with just 7 runs on the board. Kohli tried to cut a Mohammad Nabi delivery but to his misfortune, the ball landed in Rahmat Shah’s safe hands and Kohli had to walk off the field after a quick 67 off 63 balls.

Kohli was batting against Afghanistan in ODIs for the first time. Kohli’s wicket put India in a spot as India were reduced to 135 for 4. India posted a total of 224-8 at the end of their 50 overs.

Virat Kohli has been in top form since 2016 and has always been the most reliable batsman for India. He has scored three centuries this year, but is yet to score a ton in this World Cup.

KL Rahul was looking in good touch, but couldn’t capitalize. He got out to a poor shot off Mohammad Nabi’s delivery. After the early wickets, Virat Kohli and Vijay Shakar were forming a good partnership, but Shankar fell prey to Rahmat Shah.

India, for the first time this World Cup, were under pressure on a pitch which afforded turn. Afghanistan’s bowling attack was equipped with 4 quality spinners, but Kohli was batting comfortably.
