India managed to scrape through a tough encounter against Afghanistan, but the World Cup clash against England turned out to be a true reality check for the team at Edgbaston on Sunday. The Indian bowlers were smashed to all parts of the ground by the English openers, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow as they piled on a mammoth 160-run stand in over a run-a-ball. However, the partnership could’ve been broken had India taken the Decision Review System (DRS) to dismiss the former. Netizens took a dig at the seniormost member of the side, MS Dhoni, whose ‘Dhoni Review System’, is often termed foolproof, for his failure to spot the edge. Even umpire Aleem Dar was at the receiving end of memes and other funny comments amid his country Pakistan wanting England to lose so that they have a chance to make it to the semi-finals.

With the score at 72/0 in 12.3 overs, Roy failed to get meat on a Hardik Pandya short ball, that went to Dhoni. While captain Kohli rushed to his all-rounder to consult if they should take the DRS, the wicketkeeper, even after appealing initially, was not convinced. Kohli followed his former captain’s advice and they decided not to go to the TV umpire. However, the Ultra Edge, as replays suggested, detected a spike when the ball went past Roy’s bat.

Netizens had a field day over Dhoni’s rare failure to spot the edge, wondering how it went wrong this time, demanding DRS be now changed to ‘Dhoni Retire System’ while joking about Kohli’s over-dependence on the veteran.

There were memes galore on how Pakistan fans would react to Aleem Dar’s goof-up.

The duo then went on to add 88 runs more and their partnership took the game away from the Indians. Roy was finally dismissed for 66 while the latter went to score 111. At the time of publishing this story, England were 212/3 after 35.5 overs with captain Eoin Morgan also back in the pavilion.
