‘Gabbar is Back’ might be the name of the Akshay Kumar movie, but it was the most apt way to describe Shikhar Dhawan’s return to form. The opening batsman was fierce like Amjad Khan in ‘Sholay’ as he sent the Australian bowlers all over the field to score an outstanding knock of 117 runs off 109 balls. He also joined an elite list involving Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly for most hundreds for India in the World Cup and ICC tournaments.

Dhawan scored his third hundred in World Cups and is now his only behind the legendary opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who have 6 and 4 tons respectively. The southpaw also bought up his sixth century in ICC events, including World Cup and Champions Trophy. Here again, he is behind the two former cricketers, who both have 7 100s each.

Dhawan, with his classy knock that featured 16 fours, laid the foundation for the Indian innings, for an opening partnership of 127 along with partner Rohit Sharma, who also chipped in with a knock of 57. After Sharma’s dismissal, Dhawan carried on his momentum with a partnership of 93 runs that set India up for a big score.

Dhawan’s previous two hundreds had come in the 2015 edition, where he was the fifth-highest scorer with 412 runs. His tons had come against South Africa and Ireland. This is his 17th ODI hundred.

After Dhawan's dismissal, captain Kohli and Hardik Pandya took the team past 300, before the all-rounder departed for a quickfire 48. Kohli was holding fort at 78 at the time of publishing this story. India were at 314/3 in 46.4 overs.
