WORLD CUP 2019 | Umpire Michael Gough’s Wikipedia page gets a hilarious update after his controversial decision for Rohit Sharma dismissal against West Indies

Trolling, abusing and ranting against any celebrity is common now, but it seems fans chose an all-new way to attack a celebrity. The person at the receiving end here was umpire Michael Gough, who came into the spotlight by ruling Rohit Sharma out in controversial circumstances in the World Cup encounter at Old Trafford, Manchester on Thursday. The former cricketer’s Wikipedia page got a hilarious update after his decision, accusing him of not liking the opening batsman and being biased against India, following which the popular website locked his page due to ‘vandalism’.

There was an intense debate on social media if Rohit nicked the ball or not in the sixth over bowled by West Indies' Kemar Roach. On-field umpire Richard Illingworth didn’t think the 32-year-old hit the ball, but West Indians were convinced he got an edge and thus reviewed it. 

The decision now rested in the TV umpire Michael Gough’s hands. The umpire went through the replays and after the Ultra Edge detected a faint edge, asked Illingworth to change his decision. The Mumbai batsman had to return to the pavillion.

Not just netizens, several celebrities too debated if Rohit was indeed out and many were assured that he was not. 

However, some fan or fans didn’t waste too much time in editing Gough’s Wikipedia page.  They added, ‘He don’t like Indian cricketers specially and specifically Rohit Sharma’ (sic).

Their additions included, “He is under fire for choosing to overturn the on-field umpiring decision of ‘not out’ for Rohit Sharma without considering a replay of the ball and conclusive evidence.”

The concluding lines were the funniest, “It is of suspicion that he is biased for his host team, England, to reach the semi-finals as England had back-to-back humiliating defeats by Sri Lanka and Australia.” 

Interestingly, the edited words didn’t stay there for too long and the page, without the new words, suddenly became ‘protected’. For those unaware of how Wikipedia works, one can edit any of the articles on the platform, but not those that are protected, as indicated by the lock symbol at the top right corner. 

Due to the fans’ activity, when the cursor now moves on the lock symbol, it reads, ‘This article is semi-protected until July 11, 2019 at 11.28 UTC, due to vandalism.’

Rohit’s dismissal didn’t turn out to be too costly as Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni’s fifties and Hardik Pandya’s quickfire knock of 46 ensured India scored 268/7. The Caribbean went down without a fight as they were bundled out for 143, courtesy Mohammed Shami’s 4 wickets, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal’s 2 wickets apiece, while Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav also took a wicket each.
