New Zealand maintained their unbeaten run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 with a four-wicket win over South Africa at Edgbaston on Wednesday. By the virtue of this win, the Kiwis are now at the pole position in the points table with four victories in five games. Their match against India last week was washed away due to rain.
Coming back to the New Zealand-South Africa contest, the Kiwis were made to earn their win by the Proteas which was similar to their nail-biting win over Bangladesh. However, there was a bizarre incident that happened during New Zealand's tense run chase and it included their destructive opening batsman Martin Guptill. Guptill was out hit wicket by Andile Phehlukwayo. Nonetheless, he was dismissed in a rather unfortunate manner.
It happened in the 15th over of the second innings. Phehlukwayo had bowled one short on the body. he looked to play a pull shot, but could not balance himself as due to to a 360-degree turn. The ball went through mid-wicket but the Kiwi opener did not realize what had happened. His back foot slipped, hit the leg stump and it ended up dislodging the leg stump. Unfortunately, it brought curtains down to his innings as he walked back to the pavilion after scoring a 59-ball 35. His dismissal also caused a slight panic in the New Zealand camp as they were reduced from 72/1 to 80/4 in no time. Meanwhile, South African skipper's priceless expression at the slips was something to watch out for.
