Pakistan won their final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 against Bangladesh by 94 runs at Lord's on Friday as they ended their campaign in style. Meanwhile, veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik announced his retirement from ODI cricket while Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza said that he would take a call on his career after reaching back home.
There were many moments in the clash of the Asian teams. They included Babar Azam missing out on his century, Imam Ul Haq's hit-wicket after scoring a ton, etc. However, there was an unfortunate moment as well and it included Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed.
It happened in the 45th over of the first innings which was bowled by Mohammad Saifuddin. Imad struck the ball with full force which took Sarfaraz by surprise. He tried to get out of the way but his elbow came in the middle as the ball struck him hard. The wicket-keeper batsman was in pain as the physiotherapist came out to the field and was seen applying healing spray. The Pakistan skipper left the field in the 46th over, but came back with one ball left in the innings where he only managed to hit a single. The 2017 Champions Trophy-winning skipper also kept wickets in the second innings.
The video of Sarfaraz Ahmed being struck on his elbow by Imad Wasim's shot was posted by ICC.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. They lost Fakhar Zaman early but Imam Ul Haq (100) and Babar Azam (96) added 157 runs for the second-wicket. Some good batting, in the end, helped 1992 winners get to 315/9 in their 50 overs. Nonetheless, their chances of qualifying for the semis ended when Bangladesh scored seven runs in their run chase.
Bangladesh's chase never took off as they were reduced to 78/3. Only all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan could show some resistance with a 77-ball 64 as the Mortaza-led side were bowled out for 221 in the 45th over.
Shaheen Afridi bowled an outstanding spell. He also became the youngest bowler to take five wickets in a World Cup. The tall pacer finished with figures of 6/35 at an economy rate of 3.82.
