It was not an ideal start for Pakistan as they lost their campaign opener against West Indies in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at Trent Bridge on Friday.
After being asked to bat first by West Indian skipper Jason Holder, the 'Men In Green' got off to a steady start, but then started losing wickets at regular intervals as the Caribbean bowlers bowled in tandem. The Pakistani batsmen were vulnerable to the short ball from the Windies bowlers and fell in the trap as they were bundled out for a paltry score of 105 runs even before playing half their innings i.e. in the 22nd over. Only Fakhar Zaman (22) and Babar Azam (22) could show some resistance with the bat for the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side.
At the same time, this was also Pakistan's second-lowest total in World Cup history. Their lowest total was against England in the 1992 edition where they were bundled out for 73.
In reply, West Indies chased down the score comprehensively with seven wickets in hand in the 14th over, riding on Chris Gayle's blistering half-century.
While the Pakistan team became a subject of memes on social media, the skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed had to face the wrath of a former iconic Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. The ex-fast bowler criticized Sarfaraz after the team's forgettable performance.
The 'Rawalpindi Express' was not at all impressed with the Champions Trophy-winning captain's fitness. Akhtar said that Sarfaraz's stomach was sticking out and his face was so fat when he had come out for the toss. Even while keeping wickets, he was not able to move across due to which he is struggling behind the stumps.
Shoaib, who was a part of the Pakistan squad that had finished as the runners-up in the 1999 edition, which was also played in England & Wales took to Twitter and wrote 'It's a disappointing performance of Team Pakistan, let's not dishearten them more and back them up'
At the same time, he had also posted a video where he can be heard criticizing Sarfaraz Ahmed.
