India is battling against New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at Old Trafford in Manchester. The Men In Blue are eyeing their fourth World Cup final appearance while the Black Caps are hoping for a second consecutive summit clash appearance. While the fans were excited by some action-packed entertainment on the field, their happiness had water poured on it at the backend of the first innings as the weather gods intervened. As the players left the field, the 2015 World Cup finalists were 211/5 after the end of 46.1 overs.
All possible efforts were taken for the match to be played and for an ideal result, but it was not to be as the weather gods had other ideas. Now, the match will be played on the reserve day i.e. Wednesday. The kick-off time is at 10:30 am local time. New Zealand will start playing from 46.1 overs and will bat the rest of 3.5 overs.
However, the netizens were not at all impressed with what they had witnessed throughout the day. They came forward to express their disappointment on social media.
Here's what had happened in the first semi-final before the rain made its presence felt:
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat first. However, the Kiwis got off to a slow start and also suffered an early setback as Martin Guptill was dismissed just when the pressure of the initial spell got the better of him. Williamson and Henry Nicholls then added 69 runs for the second wicket stand. The Black Caps skipper scored a 95-ball 67 before he was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal. Post Williamson's dismissal, veteran batsman Ross Taylor anchored the innings.
The Indian bowlers applied the pressure on the batsmen and made sure that the run-scoring was not easy. Taylor remained unbeaten on an 89-ball 67 while Tom Latham was unbeaten on 3.
