World Cup | Should MS Dhoni's critical run-out have been overturned?

As per the rules, in the third powerplay, only five fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Nonetheless, before Lockie Ferguson had bowled the third delivery off the penultimate over, a small graphic had appeared on the screen which showed six players outside the ring.

India's dream run at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 ended after their 18-run loss against New Zealand at the Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday. The Men In Blue's hopes rested on Mahendra Singh Dhoni but his run out in the penultimate over by a direct hit from Martin Guptill signalled the end of India's campaign. When Dhoni walked out to the pavilion, the Indian fans were disappointed while the Kiwi players and fans were on the seventh sky. However, amidst all the drama and emotions, there was a major thing which went unnoticed and that too in a knockout match.

The run out would never have happened had the umpires or the third umpire focused on what was happening on the field and it could have also changed the final outcome of the game. A video of MSD's controversial run out has been posted which has gone viral.

Chasing a target of 240, India were off to the worst possible start after they were reduced to 5/3 in the fourth over. The Kiwi pacers Trent Boult and Matt Henry worked in tandem as they got rid off the big three top-order batsmen early. The Men In Blue found themselves in a spot of bother after the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma, skipper Virat Kohli and KL Rahul respectively.

After India were reduced to 92/6, Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja added 116 runs for the seventh wicket stand and almost took India on the cusp of victory. Jadeja top-scored for India with a 59-ball 77 at a strike rate of 130.51 while MSD scored a 72-ball 50. Unfortunately, his run out in the penultimate over ended the two-time winners' hopes as they were bundled out for 221 with three balls to spare.
