'Remember the time Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Spain in the World Cup?...' is likely to be a conversation starter for decades to come when people sit down to talk about football, the World Cup, and the Portuguese superstar. And among the countless people who will narrate their own experiences from Friday night in Sochi will be one Anand Mahindra, Executive Chairman of the Mahindra group.
As per Mr. Mahindra's account, he almost didn't watch the climax of the up-and-down showdown, as Portugal twice took the lead but were pegged back each time, eventually falling behind before their captain bailed them out.
It was around 1 am, Mr. Mahindra said when he pleaded with his wife to be able to turn on the TV for just a bit and partake in one of the showpiece encounters of the group stage of this World Cup. Thankfully for him, she gave permission and he was able to fire it up just in time to watch Ronaldo's masterpiece, as he was brought down just outside Spain's box by Gerard Pique, then fired an inch-perfect free-kick past a stranded David De Gea and into the corner of Spain's goal.
Here's Mr. Mahindra's full description, including what he said to his wife later, " Definition of luck: When you plead with your wife to let you watch TV around 1 am and turn it on just in time to see @Cristiano ‘bend’ the ball into the net&get a hat trick/equaliser. I turned to my wife & said: “You are a Saint; because you just allowed me to see a miracle happen”
With the matches on Saturday taking place earlier than the corresponding fixtures on Friday, and with Ronaldo's great rival Lionel Messi taking the field, one hopes that Mr. Mahindra will be able to watch all three matches!
