The UEFA Champions League returns after the international break this week. Tottenham Hotspur will play Red Star Belgrade (Crvena Zvezda) on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 12.30 am (IST) at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tottenham's hopes of reaching the knockout stages will be all but over if they lose to the visitors. They are currently on one point after two games in Group B and would fall five points behind their opponents if they are beaten. Spurs have lost two and drawn one of their last three matches in all competitions and sit third in their Champions League group behind the Serbian side.
Tottenham will be without their captain Hugo Lloris as he continues to recover from a dislocated elbow. Christian Eriksen is also sidelined, while Mauricio Pochettino will have summer signings Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso match fit. Spurs lost their last UEFA Champions League match 2-7 at home to Bayern Munich, the first time an English team has lost by five goals in a Champions League match at home in any competition.
Red Star Belgrade are still without Branko Jovicic, who sustained a knee injury during the summer, while Milan Gajic remains sidelined since October. They have won just one of their 10 away UEFA European games in England, winning 2-1 against Liverpool in November 1973 in the European Cup. They have lost all four away UEFA Champions League matches, scoring twice and conceding 16. Premier League fans may recognise some of the opponent's stars with former Chelsea midfielder Marko Marin in their contingent. Rajiv van La Parra spent five years in England with Wolves, Brighton, Huddersfield and Middlesbrough - while Jose Canas had 23 Premier League appearances at Swansea City.
