Portugese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded the 'UEFA Goal of the Season' award for his sensational overhead kick he scored while playing for his former club Real Madrid against his present club Juventus in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League 2017/18.
The 33-year-old showed amazing acrobatics, and blasted an amazing bicycle kick from a cross by his former teammate Dani Carvajal. The effort was so good the even the Juventus fans stood up and applauded the genius of Ronaldo.
The five-time Ballon d'Or beat Marseille's Dimitry Payet to the accolade. The latter scored an amazing solo goal against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Europa League. Finishing in third was Eva Navarro, who scored a stunner for Spain against Germany in the final of Women's U-17 EURO.
Following the announcement of award, Ronaldo took to Twitter to express his feelings about the achievement. His message read, "Thanks to everyone who voted for me. Will never forget that moment, specially the reaction of the fans in the stadium. #UEFA Goal of the Season #SpecialMoment"
This was one of the 15 goals Ronaldo scored during his side's road to UEFA Champions League success. The Portugese skipper helped his club to a third consecutive title, and made it four titles in five years. But just over a month after the victory, he stunned the world by announcing his departure from Real Madrid. CR7 decided to end his nine-year long association with the Spanish giants, making a move to Juventus for a reported fee of 101 million pounds.
It seemed like Blancos would feel his loss, which came soon after Zinedine Zidane had stepped down from his post as the manager. But under new manager Julen Lopetegui, the club has made a positive start to their season, with Gareth Bale at the forefront.
Following their 2-0 win over Getafe in the season opener and a 4-1 win over Girona in the La Liga, it seems Real Madrid have unearthed Ronaldo's replacement from within the squad in the form of Bale. The Welshman has been brilliant for his club at the start of the seasons, and more or less looks like a new signing. He scored one, assisted one and was sublime in his side's second consecutive win the in the league.
