Cristiano Ronaldo becomes sixth player to register 700 goals

The captain of Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo became only the sixth player in the history of football to register 700 career goals in both country and club.

The captain of Portugal national team, Cristiano Ronaldo became the sixth player in the history of football to register 700 career goals for both club and country in all competitions on October 14. Ronaldo achieved the 700th goal against Ukraine in the Euro 2020. Ronaldo, who already has five Ballon d'Or to his name, converted a penalty in the 72nd minute of the match to score a goal. The international player made his debut at the age of 18 and registered his first goal in the opening match of Euro 2004.

The 700 club

Other players who touched the 700-mark before Ronaldo include Josef Bican from the Czech Republic, Gerd Muller from Germany, Ferenc Puskas from Hungary, Brazil's Pele and Romario. The Argentine player Lionel Messi, along with the Portuguese player are the only two active players who were hoped to go past 700, however, Messi is currently at 672 goals. Moreover, Ronaldo has scored 95 goals for Portugal and presently he is just second in line with Iran's Ali Daei who has scored 109 goals.

Group B in Euro 2020

After defeating Portugal, Ukraine is now at the top of group B in the qualifying tournament with 19 points in seven matches. Portugal is next in line with 11 points. Portugal was undefeated in their group along with Ukraine but they've managed to win only thrice while drawing twice in five games. On the other hand, the Ukrainian team now has six wins and a draw in the six games they've played so far. Serbia currently at third behind; one point behind Portugal. Both sides look likely to represent Group A at the Euros next year, with Ukraine sealing their spot with a win in the fixture. Ukraine somehow managed to squeeze a draw away from home when the sides met back in March.
