Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave Real Madrid' at least that’s what Spanish papers are saying. The Portuguese legend apparently told his close friends that he wants to leave Madrid and that his decision cannot be changed.

Now how did we come to this? According to reports the Real Madrid star is ‘upset’ after being accused of tax evasion and wants to leave, sources close to him tells media.

Ronaldo, 32 signed for Real Madrid in 2009 from Manchester United for what was a then world-record fee of £80m. He has since scored a club-record 406 goals in 394 appearances for the European champions.

Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer for Real madrid

It wasn't long ago, when everyone thought all’s well in the Madrid camp after Ronaldo scored a brace in the Champions League final and played a huge role in Madrid’s title winning campaign. But clearly that is all a thing in the past now.

Was the Champions league final Ronaldo’s last appearance for the Los Blancos? Where could he go? And what next for Real Madrid if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves?

What actually happened?

Sources close to him say that “he is very sad and upset with the tax evasion reports and that he doesn’t want to stay in Spain” reported the media.

Now the biggest question arises, Did Ronaldo actually mean what he said? Or maybe it's something he said in a moment when he was really angry. Whatever maybe the case, if Ronaldo has made up his mind that he’s going to leave, it’d be really difficult to change his mind.

This is not the first time Cristiano Ronaldo has demonstrated his power at the Spanish club by flirting to leave. In 2012 he gave a pitch interview where he said “I’m sad and the club knows why” which caused widespread panic, from Madrid fans all the way to the Bernabeu boardroom.

The latest ‘power struggle’ from Ronaldo looks very similar like the last one and some would say it’s going to have the same outcome like last time. Cristiano Ronaldo though he’s 32, looks to be in better shape as the days progress, hence it wouldn’t be surprising if Real Madrid actually fights to keep him in the team.

At the end of the day, maybe that’s what Ronaldo wants. A renewed and improved contract which would also legislate for the damage that was caused by the recent tax controversy. But then instances in the past have suggested that though Ronaldo is Madrid’s all-time top scorer, he doesn’t feel at home in Spain. He has repeatedly shown his discontent over the supporters booing at him.

What next for Cristiano Ronaldo?

It’s too early to say that Ronaldo will be leaving Madrid this summer, but if this is to continue and the player does not back down, chances are highly unlikely that the club will stand in his way. Then the question arises, who can afford him?

His €1 bn buyout clause is clearly beyond everyone’s reach for now. Realistically, the Los Blancos could accept an offer around £120m which they would look to reinvest in the 18-year-old talisman from Monaco Kylian Mbappe.

If Ronaldo is to leave, Real Madrid will look to teen sensation Kylian Mbappe

Who can afford him?

There aren’t many teams in the world right now who could afford such a sum. Initial rumors were that he was heading to China where suddenly money has brought the game into life luring many talented players to play in the Chinese league.

He easily has a few more years of top class football left in him and knowing Ronaldo’s attitude towards the game he would love to win as many trophies as possible and play at the highest level.

Will the Champions league final be the last match Ronaldo plays for the Los Blancos

Paris Saint-Germain is another option as the club owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi is a good friend of Ronaldo and the French club is one of the few clubs who could afford him. Ronaldo would perfectly fit the bill as the French team is still searching for a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Manchester love affair

Ronaldo was adored at Old Trafford

Then finally there’s the romantics’ choice in Manchester United. Ronaldo signed for Madrid after spending six glorious years at Old Trafford. Ronaldo was adored and loved at the English club, so much so that in the Champions League quarterfinal match between Manchester United and Real Madrid in 2012-13, chants of ‘Ronaldo is home’ echoed around the stadium.

Now, Would Manchester United buy him back? Nobody knows will it happen or not, but do Manchester United want to see Ronaldo back in Old Trafford, the answer is big yes! The fans still sing ‘Viva Ronaldo, Viva Ronaldo’ at Manchester and fans have been all over social media encouraging Ed Woodward to get him back.

But all emotions apart, United have been down this road before, Most notably in 2015, when Manchester United expressively wanted to buy defender Sergio Ramos in 2015, who later ended up signing a new deal at Madrid.

Will the Prodigal son come back home?

Having said that, United will be clearly keeping  a close eye on the situation, but it’s almost certain that given a chance, United would jump right in there to bring the ‘prodigal son’ back home.

Ultimately, this whole situation looks very cloudy. A lot of people in Spain would say this was a wrong moment to make such a statement especially through media. A lot of people would feel he should have spoken to the club first than talking to the press.

But then eventually we are all currently living in a world where Ronaldo wants to leave Real Madrid and surely this is tipped to be the story of this summer transfer season. But for now, it’s the surprise element that has made this whole saga oh! so exciting.
