Liverpool's Mohammed Salah has beaten the likes of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the FIFA Puskas award. An accolade which is awarded to a player who scores an outstanding goal during the course of the season.

The FIFA accolade which has been awarded to the Egyptian has come as a surprise to many, with Gareth Bale heavily tipped to win the prize for his stunning acrobatic effort that helped Real Madrid secure the fourth consecutive Champions League crown.

The Liverpool forward also fended off stiff competition from Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a mind-blowing overhead kick against current Juventus club, while playing for Real Madrid in the Champions League. The strike that had won him the UEFA 'Goal of the Season' award, missed out on FIFA's accolade.

There were 10 strikes in total nominated for the prize, including Lionel Messi's solo effort against Nigeria in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. However, Mo Salah's amazing effort against Everton in the Merseyside derby stood out the most to win the prize.

The goal saw Salah shrugging off two players on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a curling effort in the top left corner of the net in what was an improbable angle. The strike fired Liverpool in the lead, but match ended 1-1 after Wayne's Rooney equalized from the penalty spot following a controversial decision from referee Craig Pawson.

The Egyptian enjoyed a stellar first season at Anfield, scoring 44 goals in all competitions, which included 11 goals in the Champions League. Salah, also helped Liverpool reach the final of UEFA Champions League and finish fourth in the Premier League.

Other nominations included in the Benjamin Pavard's thumping strike against Argentina at the FIFA 2018 World Cup, which went on to be chosen as the goal of the tournament. Other World Cup strikes from Portugal's Ricardo Quaresma and Russia's Denis Chersheyv were among the nominations.
