FIFA says it takes security "seriously" as a delegation from the world governing body began a two-day inspection tour of Mexican 2026 World Cup host cities.

On Wednesday the Mexican government announced it will deploy a battalion of National Guard troops to the Mayan Riviera in the wake of a spate of shootings that have put the crown jewel of the country's tourism industry on edge.

Two foreign tourists were killed and three wounded last month in the crossfire between drug dealers.

FIFA visited Mexico City on Thursday as part of the final of three inspection tours across North America where FIFA will inspect all 22 cities bidding to host games in 2026.

The delegation will now continue to Guadalajara, Los Angeles before wrapping up in Toronto next week. FIFA says it will announce 2026 World Cup host cities early next year.
