Germany hosted Argentina in a star-studded international friendly at Signal-Iduna Park, Dortmund. The match ended in an entertaining draw with two goals apiece to either side.

Here are some key moments from the game:

Ter Stegen gets the nod

Among all the buzz surrounding Germany vs Argentina; there was a friendly battle for the number 1 position between Ter Stegen and Manuel Neuer. A lot of fans wanted to see Ter Stegen start ahead of Neuer and did get what they wished for as Ter Stegen did actually start the game; to much joy to the home fans

Early goals to sets up the hosts

Germany started the game in their typical fashion; pressing up high and winning the ball as soon as possible. Their early dominance did not go in vain as goals from Serge Gnabry (15’) and Kai Havertz (22’) gave them a cruising start. This was, by the way, Kai Havertz's first international goal which resulted from a wonderful flowing move from Germany.

Scaloni got the first half tactics wrong

Argentina had no Messi or Aguero to rely upon for attacking threat and Scaloni rightly got it wrong in the first half for Argentina, as they failed to test Ter Stegen much during the first half. The only time they came close was through De Paul’s long-range effort off the crossbar.

Substitutions do the trick for Argentina

Argentina needed to make some changes to have any real chance at the game and Saloni didn’t disappoint, with his substitutions being the difference-maker. Lucas Alario (66’) and Lucas Ocampos (85’) both of whom came on in the second half restored parity to the game. A change from a back four to a back 3 helped Argentina to get a hold over Germany

Inexperience costs new-look Germany

Germany started with a strong 11 although an inexperienced line-up with debuts to Gian-Luca Waldschmidt and Robin Koch. The side as a whole performed really well as demonstrated by an hour-long dominance, but failed to hold when Argentina pushed on in the final 30 minutes. This must be a concern to Low as Germany similarly conceded 3 goals to the Netherlands in the final 30 minutes last month.

Both sides though not satisfied with the result should be looking to take positives ahead with Germany taking on Estonia in the Euro 2020 qualifiers and Argentina taking on Ecuador in a friendly game.
