Lionel Messi etched his name as the most successful player in Barcelona's history following their 2-1 win over Sevilla which earned them the Supercopa 2018 trophy. The Argentine superstar won his 33rd title with the club, which is the highest by any player who has ever featured for Barcelona.
It was not an easy road to victory for Messi and his team. Their opponents took the lead in the ninth minute against all the odds. A long ball from the back was met with a poor header by Jordi Alba, and the ball reached Luis Muriel. The striker ran at the defense, before poking a pass towards the left for Pablo Sarabia, who curled a first time effort past Marc Ter Stegen.
Though, the Sevilla fans had a heart in the mouth moment after the assistant referee had raised his flag for offside. But after consultation with VAR, the referee decided the goal was fair and Sevilla were 1-0 up.
Stunned by the goal, Barcelona went on attack, and searched for the equalizer. And it came in the 42nd minute, thanks to the geniuses of Messi. The Barcelona skipper took a brilliant free kick from 25 yards out, which the right hand post before falling perfectly in place for Gerard Pique, who put the rebound into the empty net. Again the referee consulted with VAR for a potential offside, but that wasn't to be.
And the comeback was completed in the 78th minute through a wonder strike by Dembele. He got the ball 25 yards from goal, and decided to have a crack, with Sevilla defenders retreating. The youngsters effort was unstoppable as it cannoned off the bar and went in.
Messi's 33rd title with Barcelona means he has now surpassed Andres Iniesta, who won 32 titles during his 16 years at the club. The Argentine has won four UEFA Champions League, nine La Ligas, six Copas del Rey titles withe the club. Adding to that, he also has five Ballon d'Or's to his name. The fixture was also Messi's first since being appointed as the official skipper of Barcelona. He took over from Iniesta, who departed the club earlier this year.
