Lionel Messi wins the best men's player of the year for the sixth time

Lionel Messi won the 'Best Men's Player of the Year' at the Best FIFA Football Awards on Monday evening. He won the award for the sixth time, surpassing Ronaldo

Lionel Messi won the 'Best Men's Player' at the Best FIFA Football Awards on Monday evening. This is the sixth time that Messi has been judged as the world's best footballer. He previously won the awards in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015. Messi beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk to win the award.

Messi's increasing list of accolades 

Over the past year, Messi lead Barcelona to win the La Liga and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League. The awards were founded by football's apex body in 206, and Mesis hadn't won the award yet. Ronaldo on the award in 2016 and 2017, with Luka Modric winning it in 2018. The award is a substitute for FIFA's Ballon d'Or, which the Argentine won on four occasions. Before the Ballon d'Or, Messi won FIFA World Player award. After winning the award, Messi said, "It's a special night for me. I'm lucky to have my wife and two of my three children here with me. It's the first time they're here and to be able to enjoy this with them is unique". 

United States forward Megan Rapinoe won the best women's player award. She led the United States of America to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Jill Ellis won the 'Best FIFA Women’s Player and Women’s Coach' award. 

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp won the Best Coach award for leading his side to lift the UEFA Champions League and narrowly missing out on the Premier League title. Klopp's goalkeeper Alisson Becker won the award for the best goalkeeper, defeating Ederson and Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Alisson, who had the most number of clean sheets last season won the Premier League Golden Glove award and was also named as the UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season last season.

Fifpro Team of the Year

In the FIFA Team of the Year, commonly known as 'Fifpro', Alisson and Van Dijk were the only two players who were included from the English Premier League. The Fifpro team is Alisson, Matthijs de Ligt, Sergio Ramos, Virgil van Dijk, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Frenkie de Jong, Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
