Two sides that 'slayed giants' in the Champions League quarter-finals were handed a bonus in the semi-final draw for Europe's premier club competition on Friday as remaining giants Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were drawn against each other.

Liverpool, who defeated Premier League favourites Manchester City will host AS Roma, who vanquished perennial favourites Barcelona at Anfield on April 25 in the first leg of the semis, and then travel to Rome for the return leg the next week.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid, who are gunning for an unprecedented third successive Champions League title and an incredible 13th European Cup/Champions League overall will travel to Germany on May 24 for the first leg of their heavyweight clash.

High drama was witnessed in the Champions League this weekend as teams made or attempted improbable comebacks.

  • AS Roma provided the upset of the round by overturning a 4-1 defeat at the Nou Camp by winning 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico, going through on the away goals rule.
  • Manchester City failed to make a similar comeback against Liverpool to whom they had lost 3-0 at Anfield. Pep Guardiola's side took an early lead but ended up losing 2-1, and a massive 5-1 on aggregate.
  • Real Madrid came within minutes of surrendering their 3-0 away lead over Juventus as the Old Lady stormed back at the Bernabeu but conceded a last-gasp penalty that Cristiano Ronaldo duly dispatched before the leg ended 3-1 with Madrid losing on the night but winning 4-3 on aggregate.
  • In comparison, Bayern Munich's progress was almost boring as they held Sevilla to a goalless draw after winning 2-1 in Spain in the first leg.

Madrid had faced Bayern in the quarterfinals of last year's competition winning an incredible tie 6-3 on aggregate by scoring thrice in extra time after the second leg.

The final of this year's Champions League will take place in Kiev in the Ukraine on May 26.
