Manchester City have been handed a major blow for the upcoming season after their star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne reportedly picked up a serious knee injury during training.
The 27-year-old Belgian midfielder, who damaged knee ligaments in training is expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The Manchester City playmaker is reportedly headed to Spain for specialist treatment, to reveal the extent of the injury and receive specialist treatment.
Following the news the Premier League champions released a statement, saying:
"Kevin De Bruyne is undergoing tests on his right knee after sustaining an injury at training on Wednesday."
“The extent of the problem is not yet known and we will bring you further updates on Kevin’s condition in due course.”
The news comes a major blow for manager Pep Guardiola, who aims to successfully defend the Premier League title this season. During the summer transfer window, he opted to sign a central midfielder after missing out on Jorginho's services, who joined Chelsea instead.
De Bruyne, who played an instrumental role in Belgium's third-place finish at the World Cup, was quick to return to club action. He came on a second-half substitute for the final 30 minutes in the 2-0 win against Arsenal at the Emirates.
The 27-year-old was City's Player of the Year last season after scoring 12 goals and providing 16 assists. It is understood that de De Bruyne has suffered a similar injury to the one saw him miss 12 matches last season.
However, Pep Guardiola's side have a decent run of fixtures coming up in the Belgian's absence - as they face Huddersfield at home on Sunday before taking on Wolves and Newcastle before the international break.
But, if a serious injury puts De Bruyne's out for longer than a month, then City's home game with Fulham on September 15 and the start of their Champions League campaign the following week then comes into question. Anything stretching into October would be a huge concern for City as they face away trips to Liverpool (October 7) and Tottenham (October 28) during the month.
