A few years back, Manchester United and winning were synonyms. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, the English giants had the habit of getting positive results, be it a competitive match or a pre-season friendly. The Red Devils took every game seriously, and valued it's importance.
But fast forward few years, and Jose Mourinho's Manchester United look like a defeated team. They failed to win even a single trophy last season, and the early signs suggest 2018/19 campaign will also be a disaster.
The US tour and pre-season for the Red Devils has been abysmal. Mourinho's United played a total of six matches, wherein they won just once in regulation time. It also included a thrashing in the hands of arch-rivals Liverpool.
United's final game saw them head to Germany to take on Bayern Munich. The mood in the camp, following the horrible US tour, was dull, though, they ended the International Champions Cup with a 2-1 win over Real Madrid.
But at the Allianz Arena, the English giants were taught a footballing lesson by Niko Kovac's Bayern. For the first time in their whole of pre-season, Mourinho had the luxury of playing many of his first team players. Nevertheless, his team lacked confidence as they were beaten 1-0.
The scoreline suggests a small margin of victory, but in all reality, Bayern ran over United. Despite having the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Fred in the starting XI, the Red Devils were no match to the German champions.
Kovac's side were absolutely dominant in the first half, creating chance after chance. But their finishing let them down. Though, they made sure United were punished for their lethargic display in the 59th minute.
Thiago's corner from left side was met with a powerful head of Javi Martinez. David de Gea barely moved as the ball went past him into the net. United failed to have one shot on target, showing how poor they were.
After the match, Mourinho yet again complained of not getting the players he needed. The Portugese told media that he has informed United's CEO about his wishlist in the transfer market.
But whatsoever he says regarding the signings and transfers, there is no denying that the present Manchester United team look completely lost, at least from their performance in the pre-season tour.
