What may well be the most unbelievable and comedic sequence of events to ever take place on a professional football pitch has occurred in Argentina, where a dog -- yes, a dog -- spared the blushes of a goalkeeper by last expertly heading clear what would have been a sure-shot goal.
The hilarious intervention took place in a match between Juventud Unida de Gualeguaychú and Defensores de Belgrano. In the video, with his side trailing, as the Defensores de Belgrano keeper attempts a quick counter-attack, he misjudges his kick, thwacking the ball against an opposing player. The ball takes a deflection and lands at the feet of another opposition forward who wastes no time and shoots for goal.
What happens next is nothing short of miraculous.
A dog, sprinting across the face of the goal, expertly heads the ball, as it harmlessly lands wide off the post and out of play.
The keeper-dog's intervention wasn't enough to spare his (presumed) team from a receiving a hiding, however, as they lost 3-0 in the Argentine Torneo Federale encounter.
The reactions, including puns on existing keepers' names, are priceless:
