Pope Francis stressed that Argentine star Lionel Messi "did not let success go to his head" despite his stellar career success and asked him to keep his simplicity.

In a video reproduced on Friday by the state agency Telam of Argentina, the Supreme Pontiff thanked his compatriot for sending him a signed jersey of his new club Paris Saint Germain through French Prime Minister Jean Castex, who was visiting The Vatican this week.

The Pope asked the six-time Ballon d'Or winner to preserve "that simplicity" and that  Messin could "count on him for whatever he may need"

Pope Francis is a soccer fan and supports Argentine side San Lorenzo.
