Captain Bruno Fernandes could have played his last game for Sporting Lisbon but it was an ultimately disappointing one as his side lost 2-0 in a dramatic Lisbon derby to Benfica in the Primeira Liga on Friday.

Two late goals from substitute Rafa gave the leaders the points in what was a tempestuous affair, marred by niggly fouls and a stoppage after fans threw flares on the pitch and lit fires in the stands.

Fernandes played despite being strongly linked with a move to Manchester United - although the deal is not believed to be imminent, the midfielder is reportedly about to move to Old Trafford in the transfer window.

He was subjected to some rough stuff by the Benfica defenders but did produce the standout piece of skill in the match - a magnificent curling pass into the path of Rafael Camacho, whose shot hit the post in the first half.

That was a close as Sporting got, with Rafa's late finishes proving the difference.

Benfica now lead the table by seven points after Porto's shock home defeat by Braga - while Sporting stay fourth.
