Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has revealed that they had no intention of selling Cristiano Ronaldo this summer but had to forcefully "open the door" for the prolific forward after he expressed his desire to leave the four-time defending European champions.

Cristiano Ronaldo shocked the footballing world when he decided to join Juventus in a 100 million transfer switch from Real Madrid, thus ending his nine-year trophy-laden spell in the Spanish capital.

The Portuguese left as the Los Blancos' all-time highest goal-scorer and guided them to four Champions League titles, three La Liga titles and breaking several records, thus, leaving a sizeable pair of boots to fill in for his successor.

Ever since Ronaldo's departure, there have been doubts in the minds of many as to why Real Madrid let go of their prized asset for such a low price. However, at the club's annual general body meeting, club president, Florentino Perez revealing the reasons behind the transfer insists that was the best possible deal they got for the 33-year-old.

"We did not want to sell him, but he wanted to go for personal reasons and we understood that, for all the good things he had done, we had to open the door for him. We got the highest value we could."

However, the Spanish giants seem to be getting used to life without Cristiano Ronaldo. In the absence of the Portuguese superstar, Gareth Bale has excelled in the spotlight scoring four times in Real Madrid's opening five matches.

The Welshman while revealing about how things have changed since the exit of the Portuguese talisman, he admits that the Los Blancos dressing room is more 'relaxed'. Taking a sly dig at his former team-mate, Gareth Bale believes that Real Madrid is more of a 'team' now after Ronaldo's departure.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo's life to Juventus has got off to a topsy-turvy start with compounding worries starting with his of lack of goals, and a recent incident wherein he was shown red in the Bianconeri's Group H match against Valencia on Wednesday.

UEFA announced on Thursday that it had opened disciplinary proceedings over the red card incident. However, Ronaldo will have to wait until next week to hear the fate of the European governing body's verdict.

The five-time Ballon d'or winner was plotting a dream return to his boyhood club Manchester United. But, he could see his dream go down the drain if UEFA decides to extend the ban for more than one match.
