Serie A: Sampdoria's Ronaldo Vieira racially abused by AS Roma fans

Ronaldo Vieira was the subject of monkey chants from Roma fans during Serie A match between Sampdoria & Roma that resulted in 0-0 draw between these two teams.

Serie A witnessed yet another incident of racial abuse after England Under 21 international Ronaldo Vieira was at the receiving end of monkey chants from the visiting AS Roma supporters while playing for his Italian club Sampdoria. The incident occurred at the match played on Sunday at Sampdoria's Luigi Ferraris Stadium, where the home side managed to hold the visiting AS Roma side to a 0-0 draw.

Referee Fabio Maresca, who was officiating the match, heard the chants near the end of the first half of the game and let Vieira know about it. The referee and Vieira walked off the field together at the interval but no announcement was made inside the stadium. After the incident, AS Roma tweeted an apology and apologized to Ronaldo Vieira for the racist boos he was subjected to.

While speaking to an Italian media house, the England Under-21s star who came to the club from Leeds last year said that he heard the chants but doesn't want to talk about it. He also said that such incidents happen too often and it shouldn't be this way.
Vieira was born in Guinea-Bissau and moved to England at a young age, joining Sampdoria from Leeds in 2018.

Serie A: Previous incidents of racist chants 

Fiorentina's Brazilian defender Dalbert had said he had been racially abused by Atalanta fans, while Roma banned a fan for life for sending racist insults to their own defender Juan Jesus on social media. Cagliari was cleared of racist chanting towards Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku in a Serie A match, the third time the club has been investigated for alleged racist abuse in the past two years.
