Over the years, many players have turned to management once they hang up their boots. Diego Simeone, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte, Roberto Mancini all represent the last batch of players who plied their trade in the Serie A and went on to become astute managers. Following the appointment of Thiago Motta by Genoa, we look at a few Serie A players who jumped into management in the last five years.

Clarence Seedorf

The dynamic Dutch midfielder played for Sampdoria, Inter Milan and notably AC Milan in the Serie A, where he enjoyed a trophy-laden spell. He decided to retire early from football to take over a languishing Milan on January 2014. He was dismissed in the same year after failing to improve the club’s fortunes. He has since managed Shenzhen FC, Deportivo La Coruna and most recently the Cameroon national side, from which he was relieved earlier this year.

Filippo Inzaghi

Sticking with AC Milan legends, Inzaghi spent the entirety of his career in Italy, of which 10 years came at Milan where he enjoyed a successful spell just like Seedorf. He took up the job with the Milan youth team before replacing Seedorf as the first-team coach. He too failed to change the situation at Milan and was finally dismissed in June 2015. Having honed his skills at various other Italian clubs, Inzaghi is the current manager of Serie B side Benevento Calcio.

Gennaro Gattuso

The last Milan legend on the list, Gattuso played for Milan between 1999-2012 and enjoyed the same success as the others. He took up coaching in the twilight of his playing career taking the player-coach role at FC Sion. Since returning to Italy, Gattuso managed Palermo, Pisa and the Milan youth side, before once again being appointed as the manager by Milan. His tenure was relatively longer than the aforementioned two, lasting two years. His side earned a rapport of playing an attacking style of football, but inconsistently eventually led to his sacking. He left the club this summer and is currently unemployed.

Vincenzo Montella

Finally, a player who hasn’t represented Milan or has he? Montella playing career did not include a spell with Milan, as he notably played for Roma and Sampdoria. But he was one of the many mangers who were appointed by Milan in search of success. After impressing with Fiorentina and then Sampdoria, Montella was appointed by Milan in 2016 before being relieved of his duties in 2017. After a short spell with Sevilla, he has returned to Fiorentina to replace now Milan manager Stefano Pioli.

Thiago Motta

Motta represented Genoa and Inter Milan in the Serie A. He was a part of the Inter squad that won the treble under Jose Mourinho. Having played his last football with Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, he was the manager of PSG’s U19 side before being appointed by Genoa this week. Maybe he’ll too have a successful spell with Genoa and end up at Milan. Only time will tell.
