In what is regarded as one of the crazy moments witnessed in La Liga history, fierce arch-rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid suffered shock defeats on the same day for the first time since 2015.

League leaders and defending champions Barcelona stumbled to 2-1 defeat at the hands of bottom-placed Leganes, while on the other side, 13-time European champions Real Madrid were humiliated 3-0 at the hands of Sevilla.

Both Leganes and Sevilla produced wonderful displays and deserve much needed credit for upstaging the Spanish heavyweights. While, the fierce arch-rivals blew away their chance of closing the gap between each other.

Keeping in mind the tight run of fixtures, Ernesto Valverde, had decided to rotate his squad by resting Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba, and brining in Munir El Haddadi and Thomas Vermaelen in their place. However, he was made to pay the price after the two players were not up to the challenge of filling in the boots of Suarez and Alba.

After Philippe Coutinho had opened the scoring with a superb volley, the hosts fired a second-half double in the space of 68 seconds courtesy of goals from Nabil El Zhar and Oscar Rodriguez, who is on loan from Real Madrid.

Vermaelen was caught napping when Nabil El Zhar headed the first goal, while Gerrad Pique served the second goal on a plater after misplacing his clearance, which Óscar Rodríguez took advantage of and fired the hosts into the lead.

After that, Leganes goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar did well to keep his side in the game with a spectacular double save, but barring that Barcelona  never really looked like forcing themselves into the game.

While on the other hand, Madrid's result was drastic in terms of the scoreline, but in Sevillia, they faced high class opponents, who left the Los Blancos clueless with their relentless attacks.

Andre Silva exposed Real Madrid's defensive frailties by scoring two goals in the space of four minutes. That was followed by Wissam Ben Yedder who further added to the emphatic scoreline before the stroke of half-time.

Real Madrid seemed to have to found their footing in the second-half, but it went to vain as they failed to reduce the deficit. Luka Modric had come the closest to scoring but his goal was ruled for offside by VAR.

Despite their performances not suggestive of the magnitude of the scoreline, Real Madrid's display was much-better as compared to their rivals Barcelona. However, it will still go down as an opportunity lost as they sit behind the league leaders with same points, with only goal difference separating them.
