Manchester United failed to register a shot on target as they were held to a disappointing 0-0 away draw against AZ Alkmaar on the second matchday of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, October 3, 2019. Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea made some brilliant second-half saves, helping his club escape with a point.

Even though United managed a draw, they incurred a loss in the form of Jesse Lingard as he picked up an injury. This will lead to the depletion of Solskjaer’s attacking options. Talking to the press after the match, Solskjaer termed the match as a good-away point for Manchester United. According to him, it was a match against a tough opponent on a difficult surface.

Manchester United defence seemed porous from the start, giving confidence to the hosts. Oussama Idrissa and Owen Wijndal tested the goalkeeping skills of David de Gea, firing shots throughout the match. United took half an hour for an attack as Diogo Dalot delivered a brilliant cross for Mason Greenwood but his instinctive first touch shot was blocked by Alkmaar defender Ron Vlaar. In the 80th minute, substitute Marcus Rashford was brought down by a rough tackle from Stijn Wuytens. After the match, United boss talking to the press claimed that it was a penalty.
