Known for his deadly set pieces and outstanding dead ball abilities, Antoine Griezmann certainly did live up to his reputation, when he netted a spectacular free kick for Atletico Madrid during Saturday's La Liga clash with Leganés.

After a goalless first half, the Atleti fans at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque were treated to a surprise. The Frenchman opened the scoring for the visitors in the 69th minute and did so with absolute panache!

Antoine Griezmann stepped on the freekick from 25 yards and struck a curling shot straight into the top corner, leaving the Leganés keeper with nothing much to do. Needless to say Twitter went berserk over the French International's moment of brilliance.

However, his stunning effort couldn't guarantee all the three points for his side after Leganés equallised late in the 86th minute through Guido Carillo. The Colombian latched onto a loose ball in the ball in the box after Rodrigo Tarin's cross rebounded off the crossbar.

This draw meant that Diego Simeone's side added to their poor record at a stadium, a venue that Atletico Madrid have failed to win in three attempts since Leganes got promoted in 2016.

The result also meant the Spanish heavyweights had failed to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona who sit on top of the standings with a comfortable four-point cushion, while Leganes remain 18th in the table and without a win in their last five matches.

The inconsistent form remains a major concern for Diego Simeone, who saw his side given a footballing lesson at the hands Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. They will face the German side yet again in the return fixture with rested players Diego Costa and Koke both likely to return.

Meanwhile, Antoine Griezmann is among the contenders for this year's Ballon d'Or prize. However, he faces stiff competition from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi who have won the accolade five-times each, and Real Madrid's Luka Modric who has already won the FIFA Best Player, UEFA Men's Best Player and the Golden Ball at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The winner will be announced in a glittering award ceremony which will be held in Paris on December 3
