Croatia's road to the final hasn't been a fight. In the group stage, they dominated their opposition, finishing top with three wins from as many matches. It also included a 3-0 thrashing of Argentina.
But once the knockout round started, there have been way too many scrambles for the Croatian team. They took on Denmark in the round of 16, and needed penalties to progress. It was Danijel Subasic who proved to be the hero of his team, fans and nation.
And in the quarter-finals, Croatia needed another heroic performance from their goalkeeper to overcome host nation Russia. After the match had ended 2-2 after 120 mins, Croatia overcame the hosts 4-3 from the spot-kicks.
The penalty shooutout was a heart in the mouth moment for for the fans. Those who witnessed the historic win were truly lucky. But, there were a few who were unfortunate to miss out on those final few seconds of the match.
A video has emerged, which shows Croatian firefighters watching the closing stages of Croatia's win over Russia. But as Ivan Rakitic was about to take his penalty, which was eventually the winning one, the siren went off, and the firefighters ran to dress up and head for their work.
It meant that they missed the crucial penalty which confirmed their nation's place in the semi-finals.
