It should have been about Luka Modric ending Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's 10-year duopoly of the Ballon D'Or. It should have been about Ada Hegerberg winning the inaugural women's Ballon D'Or. Instead, it became about 'twerking'.
A shocking moment ensued after what should have been a proud moment, as the 23-year-old Norwegian footballer collected her award and the presenter, who spoke in French, could only think to ask her: "Do you know how to twerk".
Hegerberg, who plays for French side Lyon won not only the French League, but also the Champions League, scoring in the final. On winning the award, she was asked by the presenter if she wanted to dance to celebrate her win, and specifically -- if she knew how to 'twerk'. To this, she answered 'no' and made to get off the stage. However, she was pestered into doing a few dance moves with former French footballer David Ginola.
The presenter, DJ Martin Solveig, has 'apologised', as per ESPN. He reportedly approached Hegerberg after the ceremony and expressed regret for if he hurt anyone.
He's not likely to be forgiven by the worldwide football audience any time soon, however -
The ceremony also saw for the first time in 10 years someone other than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi winning the Ballon D'Or, with Croatian midfielder Luka Modric taking home the gong.
