With his breathtaking goals, stylish flicks and cheeky panenka's, Sunil Chhetri is known to leave a mark every time he steps on a football pitch, but if a recent video is anything to go by, it reveals that the Indian football team skipper seem to have a way with his words too.
However, this doesn't come as a surprise though, as Sunil Chhetri had posted a heart-felt video wherein he made a rallying cry by calling out the Indian supporters to come support the national team during the 2018 Intercontinental Cup, earlier this year. And off lately, in a recent viral video, he proved that he can be great crowd-pleaser after receiving the Sporting Achievement Of The Year Award at the 2018 GQ Men Of The Year Awards.
The 34-year-old was recognised for his massive contribution to the sport in a country where he waged a lone battle for almost a decade. Upon receiving the accolade, he delivered a witty award acceptance speech which the crowd seemed to enjoy thoroughly.
“I thought I was receiving the award for the way I dress, the way I do stuff out of the pitch, my personality, the way I look. But now that we’re all convinced, including me, that this award, like all the other awards in my life, is for sports, I’d start by thanking the coaches, the players, the physios, the staff, everyone at the Bengaluru FC and the national team because of whom I won this award and probably all the awards I’ve won before and all the awards I’m going to get.”
Sunil Chhetri, who is India’s highest capped and all time top international goal-scorer with 64 goals, concluded his speech by thanking the country for the love towards the sport and also promised that he would continue to lead the Indian national team to greater heights in the years to come.
The Bengaluru FC skipper, who has enjoyed a trophy-laded career, will be looking to replicate his outstanding form for both club and country during the upcoming season. He made his 100th International appearance during the recently concluded Intercontinental Cup and helped India lift the title. Chhetri will be looking to do the same when he rubs shoulders with Asia's finest during January's AFC Asian Cup.
