With a place in the top flight of German football at stake, the first leg of the Bundesliga promotion/relegation playoff between Werder Bremen and Heidenheim ended in a 0-0 draw on Thursday night.

Tim Beermann came closest for Heidenheim in added time, shortly after Werder captain Niklas Moisander was shown his second yellow card for a late challenge, which means he will be suspended for Monday's return leg at Voith-Arena in Heidenheim.

Heidenheim are aiming for their first-ever season in the top tier after qualifying for the playoff as the third-placed team in Bundesliga 2, while four-time German champions Bremen are fighting for Bundesliga survival after ending the regular season third from bottom.
