"Slow and steady wins the race." Well, you might have to think again! Russia stunned 2010 champions Spain, beating them 4-3 on penalties in the round of 16 of the World Cup 2018.

It was a completely contrasting display from both the sides. The host nation were never in the game, and were dominated by their opponents. But somehow, Russia managed to play out the whole 120 minutes by conceding just one goal, and then scoring one of their own via a penalty.

Spain were relentless, but not ruthless. Fernando Hierro's side had all the possession. but no penetration. Their passing was slow and their game play was boring to say the least.

The 2010 champions took the lead in the 11th minute, and it didn't come from much passing or keeping the possession. Marco Asensio, starting for the first time this tournmanet, took a corner from the right side. Spain skipper Sergio Ramos was set to meet it with a header, but he was bundled to the ground by Sergei Ignashevich, who unfortunately put the ball in his own net.

From then on, it seemed like a routine win for Hierro's team. But it was just a one-goal lead, and it's always risky. And the fear turned into reality just before the half time. Gerard Pique was adjourned to have handled the ball in the box, and a penalty was awarded to Russia. Artem Dzyuba made no mistake from the spot, and suddenly out of nowhere, the score was level.

Everyone expected Spain to improve in the second half, but it was the complete opposite of it. The Spanish midfield and attack were jogging around the park without showing much intent.

Russia put all the 10 men behind the ball, and their skipper Akinfeev didn't have much to do except two or three routine saves. Things kept on going the same way, and in no time, 120 minutes ended.

Penalty shootout is a 'grab and run'. And Russia did just that. Having been on the back foot for the whole match, they won the tie via penalties. Akinfeev was the hero as he saved the spot kicks of Koke and Iago Aspas. His match-winning performance has taken his side into the quarter-finals, and given the nation a chance to dream of the unthinkable.

As for Spain, they struggled in the group stage, and their mediocre tournament continued in the round of 16. But this time, there was no way back for the 2010 champions as Russia completed a successful 'smash and grab'.
